Baby Cribs – Mattress Safety

One of the most important items in the nursery is a baby crib. Baby cribs should be equipped with a quality mattress and bumper pads. The mattress itself is another safety concern. Be sure to purchase a new baby crib that adheres to current safety standards. Be sure to select a baby crib that contains a sticker which tells you that the baby crib does indeed conform to safety standards.

Matress

Don't use an inferior mattress that fits loosely into the base of the baby crib bed. The fit should be snug and fairly tight. Baby cribs and crib mattresses are designed with specific sizes for this purpose. Make sure the baby crib will accommodate a standard crib size mattress snugly or you may end up searching for an odd size crib mattress that could end up costing you more money. To ensure the proper fit, purchase the mattress with the crib.

Baby cribs safety regulations specify that you shouldn't be able to fit more than two adult fingers (about 1 inch) width between the baby cribs sides and the mattress. Infants can get trapped in between the mattress and the baby crib, if there is even a small amount of room. Use the two-finger rule. If you can fit two fingers in-between the mattress and the baby crib, so the space is too large and a new mattress needs to be obtained.

Adjustable Mattress Height

This will allow you to adjust the height of the mattress as baby grows, so that he can't accidentally fall out of the baby crib. Move the mattress to the lowest position as your baby becomes more mobile. Once the child can pull himself up to a standing position in a baby crib, keep the mattress support on the lowest setting.

Never use any form of plastic to cover a mattress. This is extremely dangerous, since it can cause a suffocation hazard to infants. Choose a firm mattress so that the child lies on top rather than sinks into it. Use tight sheet on the mattress as well, and you need to be sure that it will remain in place.

Bumpers

To get some bumpers that go around the baby cribs are important. It will keep your babies from getting stuck between the bars of the baby cribs, and will keep the babies safe inside. Bumper pads should be removed from the baby cribs when your babies are able to get into a crawling position since they could use it as a step.

There are bumpers to fit your sheets and that are easy to wash. They should be made of cotton, and no artificial fabrics. If a blanket is used inside baby crib, it should not be placed any higher than the baby's chest and it should be tucked into the sides of the mattress. Rather struggle a bit with the baby cribs safety. This is far better than exposing your baby to the risk.
